British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.
The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several approach shafts leading to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.
RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," he added. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."
During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The UN reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
